Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout

Here’s another Gem of stout.  After loving the Boris and the Doris from Hopping Frog I was expecting a little bit of a disappointment due to high standards…I was sorely mistaken.  This is a ultra smooth stout made by the Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver; it is a creamy, complex stout aged in Oak Barrels mixed with Espresso.

 Commercial Description:

ESPRESSO OAK AGED YETI is a new addition to the Yeti clan. A generous infusion of espresso adds yet another layer of complexity to this beer, combining with the vanilla oak character, intense roasty maltiness and bold hop profile to create a whole new breed of mythical creature. It’s official: You can now have Yeti with breakfast.

Enjoy with: Breakfast burrito, eggs Benedict, hash browns, cheesecake, creme brulee.

Their words not mine, they are bringing beer back to breakfast.

Espresso Oak?

Review

Big Head

A – poured a dark thick brew into a bruges snifters.  Two finger light brown head that has lasting power and displays consistent lacing.

S – Smells of heavy coffee (I suppose this is espresso but I’m not an espresso drinker) aroma with chocolate undertones.  Not picking up the oak at all.

T – Wow, what a coffee flavor. Wow. It’s like biting into a chocolate covered expresso bean. The aftertaste displays the oak flavor. This is creamy little devil. As it warmed the expresso dimmed slightly and ended up having a more chocolate flavor. The more the flavor sank in, the more I got the flavor of s’mores(odd, I know).  I realize that was just a collection of very sporadic ideas but this beer is all over the place on flavor profiles.

M – Thick, beyond a regular liquid; this is in the category of motor oil. Carbonation is

smooth and doesnt stick out much which shows a good sign of aging.  This beer is super smooth almost feels like chocolate whole milk with carbonation.

D – Loved it, the more I have these forward thinking stouts, the more I realize that stouts can be so much more than just guiness.  This is beer is a must try and I will definately purchase again.  This does make me want to set up the four Yeti’s in a row (Regular, Oak Aged, Chocolate Oak Aged and Espresso Oak Aged) and drink each to compare the three.

“A” Beer, highly recommended.  9.99 per 22oz bomber.
